With the start of the New Year – its time for a New Home. Australians everywhere are getting ready to fulfill those ambitious New Year’s resolutions to finally renovate the family home, with a growing number looking to refurbish their existing homes rather than relocate.
Recent discussed results from St George Bank which reveal Gen Y’s are the keenest when it comes to revamping their homes this spring – nearly two-thirds of 18 to 25-year-olds plan on renovating their home in the next twelve months.
And the younger generations are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do some of the dirty work – 68 per cent plan to take on do-it-yourself renovation programs with the help of family and friends.
So if this sounds like you then there are a few things you need to consider.
Getting local council approval for structural work, extensions or additions can take up to six months, sometimes significantly longer, so you need to plan your renovation work well in advance. Planning, patience and persistence is the key to becoming an experienced renovator and your first lesson in all three is going through the approvals process.
If your house is an older home, you have the option of reproducing the detail of the original in a new extension or you can graft something modern in a contrasting style.
The preference is usually to retain the style and reproduce the line, windows, doors and door furniture so you can’t tell where the old ends and the new begins. If you go period-style, ensure you tread very delicately.
